DTE Energy

DTE Energy is a corporate holding company for electric and gas utility companies operating in Michigan.

DTE Electric serves 2.2 million customers in Southeastern Michigan. DTE Gas delivers gas to 1.3 million customers in Michigan.

DTE Energy also operates a midstream pipeline and gas gathering subsidiary, however, the company announced its intent to spin-off its midstream pipeline business in 2021. The midstream pipeline businesses consisted of operating over 900 miles of interstate pipelines that connect with more pipelines and local gas utilities.

DTE Energy also operates a subsidiary that builds facilities to capture methane from landfills and farms to generate electricity and biogas.

Coal and gas combined for nearly 67% of total generation for DTE Electric in 2020.

While DTE Electric has a net zero carbon emissions by 2050 goal, research conducted by the Sierra Club shows that it is not moving fast enough toward clean energy in the time frame needed to avoid the worst impacts of the climate crisis. Sierra Club assigned a score to every utility in January 2021 based on its plans to retire coal, construct new gas plants, and build new clean energy. DTE Electric received a ‘D’.
